Computed tomography (CT) an imaging method that uses x-rays to create cross-sectional pictures of the body.
How the test is performed
You will be asked to lie on a narrow table that slides into the center of the CT scanner. Depending on the study being done, you may need to lie on your stomach, back, or side.
Once inside the scanner, the machine's x-ray beam rotates around you. (Modern "spiral" scanners can perform the exam in one continuous motion.)
Small detectors inside the scanner measure the amount of x-rays that make it through the part of the body being studied. A computer takes this information and uses it to create several individual images, called slices. These images can be stored, viewed on a monitor, or printed on film. Three-dimensional models of organs can be created by stacking the individual slices together.
You must be still during the exam, because movement causes blurred images. You may be told to hold your breath for short periods of time.
Generally, complete scans take only a few minutes. The newest multidetector scanners can image your entire body, head to toe, in less than 30 seconds.
How to prepare for the test
Certain exams require a special dye, called contrast, to be delivered into the body before the test starts. Contrast can highlight specific areas inside the body, which creates a clearer image.
Contrast may be delivered using an intravenous line (IV) that is placed in a vein in your hand or forearm. Contrast may also be given through the rectum using an enema, or as a liquid that you drink before the scan. (When you actually drink the contrast depends on the type of exam being done.) The contrast liquid may taste chalky, although some are flavored to make it taste a little better. The contrast eventually passes out of your body through your stools.
If contrast is used, you may also be asked not to eat or drink anything for 4-6 hours before the test.
If you weigh more than 300 pounds, have your doctor contact the scanner operator before the exam. CT scanners have a weight limit. Too much weight can cause damage to the scanner's working parts.
Since x-rays have difficulty passing through metal, you will be asked to remove jewelry and wear a hospital gown during the study.
How the test will feel
The x-rays are painless. Some people may have discomfort from lying on the hard table.
Contrast give through an IV may cause a slight burning sensation, a metallic taste in the mouth, and a warm flushing of the body. These sensations are normal and usually go away within a few seconds.
Why the test is performed
CT rapidly creates detailed pictures of the body, including the brain, chest, and abdomen. The test may be used to:
- Study blood vessels
- Identify masses and tumors, including cancer
- Guide a surgeon to the right area during a biopsy
What the risks are
CT scans and other x-rays are strictly monitored and controlled to make sure they use the least amount of radiation. CT scans do create low levels of ionizing radiation, which has the potential to cause cancer and other defects. However, the risk associated with any individual scan is small. The risk increases as numerous additional studies are performed.
In some cases, a CT scan may still be done if the benefits greatly out weigh the risks. For example, it can be more risky not to have the exam, especially if your health care provider thinks you might have cancer.
An abdominal CT scan is usually not recommended for pregnant women, because it may harm the unborn child. Women who are or may be pregnant should speak with their health care provider to determine if ultrasound can be used instead.
The most common type of contrast given into a vein contains iodine. If a person with an iodine allergy is given this type of contrast, nausea, sneezing, vomiting, itching, or hives may occur. If you absolutely must be given such contrast, your doctor may choose to treat you with antihistamines (such as Benadryl) or steroids before the test. The kidneys help filter the iodine out of the body. Therefore, those with kidney disease or diabetes should receive plenty of fluids after the test, and be closely monitored for kidney problems. If you have diabetes or are on kidney dialysis, talk to your health care provider before the test about your risks.
Rarely, the dye may cause anaphylaxis (a life-threatening allergic response). If you have any trouble breathing during the test, you should notify the scanner operator immediately. Scanners come with an intercom and speakers, so the operator can hear you at all times.

For your magnetic resonance imaging exam, the technologist will position you on a table that will slide into the scanner. With the newest technology it takes only a few minutes, and unlike the older technology it is open. In fact, this MRI scanner has a window to the outside. A magnetic resonance imaging technologist will maintain constant communication with you throughout the exam. The resulting images will be reviewed and interpreted by a radiologist and a report will be sent to your doctor.

Difference between CT's, X-rays and MRI's...Unlike x-rays and CT's, MRI's do not use radiation. MRI's can detect certain diseases much earlier than other medical imaging techniques, making it the diagnostic tool of choice for many physicians.
Body parts the MRI can evaluate...Physicians use the MRI scanner to examine one part of the body at a time. The scanner can take pictures of the head, neck, back abdomen, pelvis, shoulder, elbow, knee, blood vessels and more.
Preparations...People having IV sedation or contrast (dye) should not eat for several hours prior to the test. Talk to the center to get specific instructions.
Risks...MRI's are considered safe. There are no known health risks associated with the magnetic field or the radio waves used by the machine nor should there be any side effects.
Pregnant or breastfeeding...MRI's are not recommended for pregnant women unless it is medically indicated. If you are breastfeeding and have contrast as part of your exam, please suspend nursing for 24 hours after the exam.
Noisy...Scanners work with strong metallic fields, which builds up energy. The energy is released as loud knocking sounds.
What is Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)?During a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan, radio waves are directed at protons, the nuclei of hydrogen atoms, in a strong magnetic field. The protons are first "excited" and then "relaxed," emitting radio signals, which can be computer-processed to form an image.
In the body, protons are most abundant in the hydrogen atoms of water - the "H" of H2O - so that an MRI image shows differences in the water content and distribution in various body tissues. Even different types of tissue within the same organ, such as the grey and white matter of the brain, can easily be distinguished.
Multiple sequences, each lasting two to 10 minutes are obtained in different planes. Each sequence has its own degree of contrast

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive way to take pictures of the body.
Unlike x-rays and computed tomographic (CT) scans, which use radiation, MRI uses powerful magnets and radio waves. The MRI scanner contains the magnet. The magnetic field produced by an MRI is about 10 thousand times greater than the earth's.
The magnetic field forces hydrogen atoms in the body to line up in a certain way (similar to how the needle on a compass moves when you hold it near a magnet). When radio waves are sent toward the lined-up hydrogen atoms, they bounce back, and a computer records the signal. Different types of tissues send back different signals. For example, healthy tissue sends back a slightly different signal than cancerous tissue.
Single MRI images are called slices. The images can be stored on a computer or printed on film.
MRI can easily be performed through clothing. However, because the magnet is very, very strong, certain types of metal can cause significant errors, called artifacts, in the images.
How the test is performed
You may be asked to war a hospital gown or clothing without metal fasteners (such as sweatpants and a t-shirt).
You will be asked to lie on a narrow table, which slides into the middle of the MRI machine. If you have a fear of confined spaces (claustrophobia), tell your doctor before the exam. You may be prescribed a mild sedative, or your doctor may recommend an "open" MRI, in which the machine is not as close to the body.
Small devices, called coils, may be placed around the head, arm, or leg, or other areas to be studied. These devices help send and receive the radio waves, and improve the quality of the images.
Certain exams require that a special dye (contrast) be given before the test. The dye is usually given through an intravenous line (IV) in your hand or forearm. The contrast helps the radiologist see certain areas more clearly.
During the MRI, the person who operates the machine will watch you from a room next door. Several sets of images are usually need, each taking from 2 to 15 minutes. Depending on the areas being studied and type of equipment, the exam may take 1 hour or longer.
How to prepare for the test
An MRI can be performed immediately after other imaging studies. Depending on the area of interest, the patient may be asked to fast for 4 - 6 hours prior to the scan. Other preparations are usually not needed.
The strong magnetic fields created during an MRI can interfere with certain implants, particularly pacemakers. Persons with cardiac pacemakers can not receive an MRI and should not enter an MRI area.
If you have any of the following metallic objects in your body, you should not get an MRI:
- Inner ear (cochlear) implants
- Brain aneurysm clips
- Certain artificial heart valves
- Older vascular stents
- Recently placed artificial joints
You will be asked to sign a consent form that says you do not have any of these items in your body.
Before an MRI, sheet metal workers or any person that may have been exposed to small metal fragments should receive a skull x-ray to check for metal in the eyes.
Because of the strong magnets, certain metallic objects are not allowed into the room.
- Items such as jewelry, watches, credit cards, and hearing aids can be damaged.
- Pins, hairpins, metal zippers, and similar metallic items can distort the images.
- Removable dental work should be taken out just prior to the scan.
- When the MRI magnet is turned on, pens, pocketknives, and eyeglasses may fly across the room. This can be dangerous, so such items are not allowed into the scanner area.
How the test will feel
An MRI exam causes no pain. Some people may become anxious when inside the scanner. If you have difficulty lying still or are very anxious, you may be given a mild sedative. Excessive movement can blur MRI images and cause errors.
The table may be hard or cold, but you can request a blanket or pillow. The machine produces loud thumping and humming noises when turned on. Ear plugs are usually given to help reduce the noise.
An intercom in the scanner allows you to speak to the person operating the exam at any time. Some MRIs have televisions and special headphones that you can use to help the time pass.
There is no recovery time, unless sedation was necessary. After an MRI scan, you can resume your normal diet, activity, and medications.
Why the test is performed
Combining MRIs with other imaging methods can often help the doctor make a more definitive diagnosis.
MRI images taken after a special dye (contrast) is delivered into the body may provide additional information about the blood vessels.
An MRA, or magnetic resonance angiogram, is a form of magnetic resonance imaging, which creates three-dimensional pictures of blood vessels. It is often used when traditional angiography cannot be done.
What the risks are
There is no ionizing radiation involved in MRI, and there have been no documented significant side effects of the magnetic fields and radio waves used on the human body to date.
The most common type of contrast use is gadolinium. It is very safe. Allergic reactions to the substance rarely occur. The person operating the machine will monitor your heart rate and breathing as needed.
MRI is usually not recommended for acute trauma situations, because traction and life-support equipment cannot safely enter the scanner area and the exam can take quite a bit of time.
